Career for Tax Attorney Mom
Can I get advice from you what is the best career path or job position for a mom with a toddler now? I have JD/NYU Tax LLM and years of corporate experience. Your input is highly appreciated.

RE: Career for Tax Attorney Mom

Unfortunately the tax world is not typically forgiving to mothers who want to work less hours. However, there are several options. If you want to know what area of tax to specialize in, I don't think it matters. If you are wanting to lower your workload, then the following would apply:

You can work contract so you are not a permanent employee to a company, therefore you basically work the hours you want. TaxTalent has a contract department and could work with you on finding a position. Also, there are many moms who work at law firms and Big4 on a reduced schedule. I think this is difficult because you are in the service industry and whatever the client wants, they get so it can be hard to juggle. However, many women do it. You can also explore part-time positions with companies, however it is a little difficult to do this because you usually have to prove yourself in order to get them to buy off on that type of arrangement.

In summary, contact TaxTalent, make as many contacts as you can, select the companies or firms you are interested in and aggressively contact them to market yourself. The good news is the market is hot right now so you have a better chance to work out a flexible arrangement.

RE: RE: Career for Tax Attorney Mom
I am co-owner of a staffing agency that specialized in placement for individuals that want strictly part-time work. We have had challenges getting part-time flexible opportunties for individuals with strong professional backgrounds like yours.

I was glad to read this post and be assured by the career coach that it is not just my region but the industry in general. We have had some success with bookkeeping placements with CPA firms but not many placements of a professional tax or accounting nature.

I would encourage you to continue working with firms like TaxTalent that specialize in one particular industy. TaxTalent undoubtly has a strong foundation and can collect more opportunities than one can find on their own.

In addition, you could consider networking with CPA offices in your area and ask that they refer you to their clients if they hear of a need (especially during tax time). CPA offices that are small to medium size are good prospects.

There is always e-lance.com or other reputable freelancing sites to advertise availability for contract work. There is also the possibility of partnering with a CPA office, community college or an organization that support small businesses. You could provide a free seminar with information on dealing with the IRS, Tax Protection & Reduction, etc. More than likely, you will remain in their "important contacts file" and be called upon when they have an issue. As a proactive small business owner, I would attend a seminar and if I like your delivery and knowledge of issues that affect my business, I would be sure to called you in the event I needed help.

The alternative suggestions may provide you with the flexibility to manage your toddler and keep your career going.

STATE GOVERNMENT. We are always looking (or are flat out desperate) for people with good tax experience. While I don't have kids myself, a number of my colleagues came to state government precisely because of the predictable, set work hours and good benefits. Granted, the pay is less, but you can't beat the lack of stress.
