Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic State & Local Tax (SALT) Manager to join our in-house tax team supporting a multi-entity organization. This role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of indirect taxation, including sales and use tax, excise tax, and other transaction-based taxes across multiple jurisdictions. The ideal candidate is both technically strong and operationally minded, with the ability to manage compliance, drive process improvements, and partner cross-functionally to support business growth and mitigate tax risk.

Key Responsibilities:

Indirect Tax Compliance & Reporting

·         Manage the preparation, review, and timely filing of indirect tax returns, including sales & use, excise, gross receipts, and similar taxes across multiple states and jurisdictions

·         Oversee tax calendar, ensuring compliance deadlines are met for all entities

·         Maintain and improve processes for tax data collection, validation, and reporting accuracy

·         Review and reconcile tax accounts and ensure proper documentation is maintained

Tax Provision & Accounting Support

·         Support indirect tax accounting, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations

·         Partner with accounting and finance teams to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions

·         Assist with month-end and year-end close processes related to indirect tax

Audit & Controversy Management

·         Lead and manage state and local indirect tax audits, inquiries, and notices

·         Serve as the primary point of contact for tax authorities

·         Develop and execute audit defense strategies, including documentation and response preparation

·         Identify and mitigate audit risks and exposures

Advisory & Business Partnership

·         Provide technical guidance on indirect tax implications for new products, services, and business initiatives

·         Partner with operations, legal, finance, and IT teams to ensure tax compliance in business processes

·         Advise on nexus, taxability, sourcing, and multi-state compliance matters

·         Support M&A activities, including due diligence and integration of indirect tax processes

Process Improvement & Automation

·         Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency through automation, system improvements, and process standardization

·         Lead implementation and optimization of tax technology solutions (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, Sovos)

·         Improve internal controls related to indirect tax compliance and reporting

Multi-Entity & Jurisdictional Oversight

·         Manage indirect tax compliance across multiple legal entities and business units

·         Ensure proper registration, licensing, and ongoing compliance in all applicable jurisdictions

·         Monitor changes in state and local tax laws and assess impact across the organization

Required Experience & Skills:

·         Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

·         5–8+ years of experience in state & local tax, with a strong focus on indirect tax

·         Experience in a corporate in-house tax department and/or public accounting firm

·         Deep knowledge of multi-state sales & use tax laws, nexus rules, and compliance requirements

·         Proven experience managing audits and interacting with tax authorities

·         Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

·         CPA license or MST preferred.

·         Experience with Tax software is required.

·         Experience with a multi-entity environment preferred.
