The Senior Analyst, Sales Tax Audit and Planning reports directly to the Manager, Sales Tax Audit and Planning and is responsible for assisting the Sales and Use Tax Planning and Controversy Manager with all sales and use tax audits and refund initiatives.  Specific duties to include generation of transactional reports from various enterprise systems, reconciliation of sales tax returns and trial balances, and the pulling of source documentation, such as customer invoices, vendor invoices, and exemption certificates.  It will be the role of the Senior Analyst to organize and perform the initial analysis of sales and purchase transactions being reviewed under audit, and to assist with the development of initial tax positions.  The Senior Analyst will also be tasked with drafting certain protest and appellate documents related to either audit assessments or claims for refund.

In addition to audits and refund initiatives, the Senior Analyst will be asked to perform substantive technical research related to taxability of purchases and related exemptions in approximately 40 states, and will also monitor general sales tax law changes.


  • Support all aspects of the sales, use and excise tax audit process from notification through completion
  • Support consulting firms assisting with reverse audits, registrations and research
  • Regularly communicate with Manager, Sales Tax Audit and Planning regarding projects and tasks
  • Develop good working relationships with personnel within the Finance, Purchasing, Shared Services, Finance Managers and other operations teams
  • Ensure field, AP, customer, and vendor questions are addressed by the team accurately and timely
  • Maintain knowledge of sales and excise tax law
  • Contribute to tax minimization efforts through identifying overpayments, filing refund claims and updating systems to ensure overpayments are minimized
  • Identify and assist with the implementation of process enhancements to correct issues stemming from audits or other diligence
  • Provide subject matter expertise as part of corporate and tax initiatives impacting sales, use and excise taxes
  • Support sales tax registration analysis including voluntary disclosure agreements as applicable
  • Support the research and communication of sales tax impacts of large capital projects
  • Participate in professional organizations
  • Perform administrative tasks in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager, Sales Tax Audit and Planning

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA or CMI preferred, but not required. Public accounting experience a plus.
  • 4+ years of experience as part of a dynamic multi-state sales tax team supporting manufacturing operations
  • Exceptional oral/written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with diverse groups
  • Working knowledge of Vertex O or similar sales tax decision making software is preferred, along with diverse enterprise system knowledge or adaptability

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage and make progress on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to gather facts, research a tax position, and accurately communicate tax advice to Martin Marietta stakeholders
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional oral/written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with diverse groups
  • Proficiency in tax research tools and Microsoft products
  • Good working knowledge of multi-state sales tax rules and regulations. Ability to apply these rules to transactions in a complex industry
  • Ability to keep Manager, Sales Tax Audit and Planning current on important matters.
  • Positive, assertive, and persuasive “can do” communication style
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in problem solving
  • Comfortable with ERP systems, sales tax determination systems and using technology to achieve results. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Open to the use of data analytics
